Espace citoyen des Confluents breathes new life into a large site formerly occupied by a petrochemical plant, transforming it into a regenerative civic hub.
Located in Laval-Est, the project covers approximately five acres and addresses a longstanding deficit in local amenities, restoring ecological and community value to a long-degraded site.
The site’s major constraints informed the conceptual approach. Water structures the project through a network of interconnected retention basins that ensure full on-site stormwater management. These systems support the emergence of rich, resilient biodiversity, including more than 300 tree species, wildlife corridors, and intentionally preserved natural vegetation, while creating habitats that are favourable to local wildlife and compatible with human use.
Nature shapes the site, creating a dense landscape akin to an urban forest where living systems progressively reclaim their place. Pedestrian and cycling pathways cross through wetlands and naturalized areas, offering a gradual immersion in nature. Rest areas punctuate the trails, encouraging moments of rest and observation along the way.
The municipal building, which houses a library, a community centre, and cultural spaces, serves as a civic landmark; the landscape extends the interior volumes outward, orchestrating rhythms across the site. Together, architecture and landscape structure uses, support social life and anchor Espace citoyen des Confluents within a process of sustainable regeneration.
