Projet Paysage was commissioned to plan exterior landscaping for a truly monumental contemporary architecture project, Québec City’s Videotron Centre. The result is an insightful response to the venue’s complex event-related challenges.
When designing a space to accommodate up to 20,000 people, the search for fluidity, efficiency, and safety were primary design drivers. The public square at Videotron Centre is much more than a thoroughfare for accessing the arena – it is also a public square that can accommodate major events such as the renowned Québec City Marathon. Key circulation and safety developments include emergency exits, along with a bus loading zone and private entrance for sports teams, with traffic flows that mirror the structure’s signature circular shape. Vegetation has been planted at the structure’s base to camouflage the building’s less attractive elements while highlighting its architectural assets. Further greenspaces establish organic boundaries between the arena and parking areas. Throughout the site, Projet Paysage struck a harmonious balance between functional concerns and the site’s imposing presence.
