Inner courtyard of the complexe Le William and its lush gardens

Le William offers its occupants so much more than a mere residential complex. Its plant-filled inner courtyard promotes overall well-being while prioritizing sustainability.

Le William figures prominently in the transformation of Griffintown, a Montréal neighbourhood emblematic of the early industrial era. Projet Paysage’s contribution elegantly met a major challenge, planting lush gardens throughout the inner courtyard to harmonize the styles of two distinct buildings, one historic and the other contemporary. This oasis of greenery benefits both the residents and the neighbouring population, in addition to providing cooling islands during hot summer weather. A long, linear wall demarcates the walkways while providing places to sit and enjoy the outdoors. Sustainability concerns guided the entire project design. All materials were selected for their adaptability, including native plants that tolerate drought, forgoing the need for an irrigation system. Permeable paving lets rainwater naturally infiltrate the soil. In uniting the innovative architecture of one building and the heritage value of another, the colourful garden links past, present, and future.
